Broken matrix in an LCD TV – why does the screen refuse to cooperate?
Nothing can ruin a movie night as effectively as sudden stripes, discolorations on the screen, or – worse – complete darkness. Although LCD televisions are very popular today and are designed to be durable, problems with the panel can be quite bothersome. What most often causes these faults?
The panel like a glass surface – delicate and prone to damage
It only takes a moment of inattention: a dropped remote, an accidental bump while dusting, or moving the television. Even a slight impact can lead to micro-cracks in the panel, which over time manifest as black spots, strange discolorations, or mysterious lines on the screen.
Darker image? What causes it?
When the screen gradually loses brightness and eventually becomes almost black, even though the sound still works – it usually means that the LED backlight or inverter has failed. A clever way to check? Shine a flashlight on the screen.
Strips, connectors, and all that small electronics
Inside the thin frame of the television lies delicate electronics. It only takes a slight loosening, a wire being slightly strained, or something burning out. Flickering, vertical or horizontal lines, or no image at all are typical symptoms of such faults.
Dead pixels – small, yet annoying
When small dots appear on the screen that do not change color, they are usually burnt-out pixels. Sometimes it's a matter of wear, sometimes a manufacturing defect. Black dots are dead pixels, while those that are constantly lit are stuck.
Sudden voltage spikes – a silent enemy of the panel
Sudden surges can silently damage the electronics responsible for the operation of the panel. If after a storm or sudden power outage the television won't turn on or shows strange artifacts – it is usually the result of such a 'blow'.
Repair or new television – which is more cost-effective?
It depends. Replacing the panel can often be costly and not worth it – it's better to look for new equipment. However, in the case of simple faults, like issues with backlighting or strips, repairs are usually quick and inexpensive. It's worth consulting a professional before making a decision.
The panel is the heart of an LCD television, so it's important to take care of the equipment, protect it from impacts, and safeguard it against voltage spikes. If despite this the screen starts to malfunction, it’s worth considering whether it’s worth the trouble or if it’s time to look for a new companion for movie nights.
